History of the Graphic design industry

Development of the Graphic Design Industry

The graphic design industry developed more significantly between the late 1800s and the end of World War 2. Technology improvement in this area was the focus of the later 19th century.

By the 19th century business owners witnessed an increased market competition, which urged designers and artists to develop new art styles, and innovative approaches toward brand identity and advertising. Business owners started focusing on brand logos, color print, and packaging of their products.

Visually enhanced products were high in demand than non-visually enhanced products. There was a need in studying the color, and composition by artists to leave a lasting impression on customers.

Naturally, in this manner, graphic design made its way into other industries such as clothing, book covers, and more.

Evaluating the historic development of the graphic design industry

Graphic design can be traced as early as 38,000 BCE. Historians discovered hand paintings, symbols, and images in caves and other locations. This content had messages and meanings behind them. This was used to communicate ideas and history from one generation to the other.

The earliest written language invented during 3300-3000 BCE was the Sumerian written language. This was an iconic moment for the graphic design world as without it we would not have seen any letters. The letters created were logographic and represented in the form of symbols.

The invention of paper in 105 AD by the Chinese also made a huge impact on the graphic design world. Printing would not have been possible without the invention of paper.

During the 700s medieval calligraphy was on the rise. This was a type of typography that involved artistic skills that made the letters more artistry, and aesthetic.

Some of the other historic moments that led to the development of the graphic design industry include-

  • The invention of the Gutenberg Press – 1439
  • The invention of logos in the late 1400s.
  • Print advertisements in the 1620s.
  • The invention of chromolithography in 1837.

William Addison was the first to use Graphic Design in his book “New Kind of Printing Calls for New Design”. This book was published in 1922.
